Chapter Twelve
âYou have known me for a very short time, Dan,â Bram said, âin one way of looking at things, but in another, our relationship is a long and loving one. In the past few weeks since youâve been living here, I have known absolute bliss, and I know that you have been happy too, or otherwise I have completely misjudged.â
âI know that you are aware of our age difference, yet you have never let it bother you. You accepted me as your lover, and it has not been an issue between the two of us. It is rare for two souls that were made for each other to actually meet and have a successful relationship, and our relationship does not feel like a new one, Iâm sure youâd agree. It feels as if weâve known and loved each other for an eternity. And there is a reason for thatâwe have!â
âDaniel, Iâm much, much older than you can even dream. Iâve lived dozens of normal life spans, in hundreds of places all over the world, and known thousands and thousands of people,â Bram said. âI am⦠a vampire.â
I wanted to rise up out of his lap and look at him to see if I could understand better from his expression. Was this a joke? Was he serious? Do such things exist? If so, should I be scared? But I wasnât scared. Strangely enough, I really didnât even doubt what he had said. I just wanted to listen and understand.
âYes, I know it may be difficult to understand or accept, but it is trueâI am a vampire! You probably have a lot of misconceptions about vampiresâjust about everyone does. First of all, almost nobody believes that vampires even exist, but we do. You probably believe that vampires are supposed to sleep in coffinsâwhich I obviously donâtâand that we burst into flames if we are exposed to sunlight. Well, you fucked me this afternoon under the blazing rays of the sun, and I did not disintegrate. You probably have heard that vampires cast no reflection, yet you have seen my reflection in the bathroom mirror almost every morning as I shave. I also show up in photographs, as you can likewise attest to, seeing as how youâve taken hundreds of photos of the two of us on our adventures.â
âI donât run away from garlic; I almost actually enjoy garlic in many foods, as you know, even though I canât say that I enjoy food. I donât shy away from crosses or crucifixes or any other holy symbol. I do not have most of the abilities that are attributed to vampires. I cannot turn into a wolf or a bat and fly away, I cannot dissolve into mist or make myself vanish, I cannot grow to a great size, nor can I shrink to an undetectable size. I cannot command wolves, bats, rats, mice, or other species of vermin, and I cannot summon a thick fog to make good a hasty get-away.â
